Plenaries Second Week

Monday, August 1
Adlerian Focus on Prevention – Theo Joosten
Since Individual Psychology is a social psychology, it is based on human relationships. According to IP, striving for equal connections includes a focus on contributions that prevent or minimize assumptions and behavior which harm relationships while encouraging relationships are grounded in human dignity. This talk will examine ideas and means how equal relationships can be achieved with a focus on prevention.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain what social equality means.
  2. Mention examples in education which are a threat to develop social interest.
  3. Demonstrate how democratic leadership may contribute to cooperative behaviour.

Tuesday, August 2
Finding our Hidden Strengths – Bruce Tate
How often do we hear ourselves saying ‘I can’t do that.’ At other times we may overlook tasks and challenges that seem impossible – perhaps we do not know where to begin or do not think that we are capable of carrying out the task. We will look at our strengths and capabilities and how we can use these courageously and demonstrate Gemeinschaftsgefühl in action.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Be able to identify strength and capability through the use of simple questions.
  2. Be able to understand strengths from a holistic viewpoint – how the mind and body interact.
  3. Be able to identify simple strategies to use and develop our personal capabilities.

Wedneday, August 3
The Use of Metaphors in Individual Psychology – Mia Levitt Frank
Human beings create and ascribe meaning to life, as they “live in the realm of meanings” (Adler, 1931). Metaphors give meaning to life, as we think, act and experience reality metaphorically. They represent the individual’s subjective perceptions of self, others, and the world. Therefore, listening for and inviting metaphors is a creative and enriching technique in Adlerian therapy, coaching and counseling. This presentation will introduce the concept of metaphors in Individual Psychology, and revisit Richard Kopp’s fascinating protocol of transforming client generated metaphors. The presentation will include a demonstration and allow participants to experience the power of metaphor transformation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will gain knowledge about metaphors in language and in Individual Psychology.
  2. Participants will identify various techniques for working with metaphors in therapy.
  3. Participants will learn a technique for transforming client generated metaphors.

Thursday, August 4
Growth and Healing after COVID-19 – Jon Sperry
Will Covid-19 cause a mental health crisis or spark meaningful change in the lives of individuals around the globe? This plenary will discuss the role of resilience and post-traumatic growth from an Individual Psychology perspective. Additionally, it will review strategies to apply Individual Psychology to ourselves and communities in response to difficulties that COVID-19 presented.
Learning Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of how the IP can be used to foster growth and healing among individuals and communities in response to COVID-19.
  2. Analyze the IP theory and how it explains resilience and post-traumatic growth.
  3. Practice applying IP theory for self care in response to COVID-19.

Friday, August 5
Inclusion and Diversity – Uti Landscheidt
We are facing a time of major challenges with regard to living together peacefully in multicultural, inclusive and diverse settings. Individual Psychology taught us that every human being is socially embedded and therewith IP helps us in seeking a way to understand individuals and their particular background. This lecture will provide examples from different countries and how the ICASSI summer school is a living proof of it

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to name examples of inclusion and diversity.
  2. Participants will be able to identify the feelings that go with inclusion and diversity.
  3. Participants will be able to make a connection to Individual Psychology.
