It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of our dear friend and long-term board member, Yvonne Schürer, on November 5th, 2024. Her contributions to ICASSI and her unwavering commitment to Adlerian Psychology have left an enduring legacy.
Yvonne’s journey with ICASSI began in 1982 in Bad Gastein, Austria, where she joined the faculty and taught her first course on “The Democratic Classroom.” Her passion for Individual Psychology was ignited early on through direct learning from Rudolf Dreikurs during his lectures in Zurich. As a young mother, Yvonne eagerly embraced his teachings, which shaped her life’s work and dedication to the Adlerian community.
In the summer of 2018, Yvonne served on the faculty for the final time in Bonn, Germany, marking the culmination of decades of impactful teaching. Over her long commitment to ICASSI, she served three terms (each four years) on the ICASSI Board, contributing her wisdom, leadership, and enthusiasm to the organization’s growth and success.
Even after stepping back from her formal roles, Yvonne continued to connect with the Adlerian community, participating in the Virtual Adler Cafés until the summer of 2024. These gatherings brought her joy and kept her deeply engaged with fellow Adlerians around the globe.
Yvonne survived her beloved husband, Heinz Schürer, who passed away on June 19th, 2024 and who has been at the summer school for many, many years as well.
Yvonne’s obituary, published in Swiss newspapers, included a wonderful quote from Rudolf Dreikurs: “The only thing which you need in life in order to develop and reach your goals is courage.” These words reflect the spirit with which she lived her life and inspired others.
For those wishing to send condolences, the family’s address is listed in her published obituary (click here for the obituary). Alternatively, you may share your memories or thoughts with our administrator, Sabine, via email, and they will be forwarded to Yvonne’s family.
The ICASSI Board mourns the loss of Yvonne Schürer, a dedicated educator, leader, and friend. Her kindness, vision, and courage will forever remain in our hearts.
