Week 1 – Type B Courses – Mornings and Afternoons

B101, Kottman, Terry – Adlerian Play Therapy
In this fun, experiential workshop, you will be introduced to Adlerian play therapy, a method of integrating Individual Psychology with the practice of play therapy. You will learn skills and techniques for establishing relationships with clients, exploring clients’ lifestyles, helping clients gain insight into their lifestyles, and reorienting and reeducating clients. Dress comfortably and be prepared to PLAY!!

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe at least 3 skills and 3 techniques for helping the child gain insight in Adlerian play therapy
  2. Describe the process of designing a therapeutic metaphor as a strategy for helping the child gain insight in Adlerian play therapy
  3. Describe the process of mutual storytelling as a method for helping the child gain insight in Adlerian play therapy
  4. Explain how metacommunication is a part of the process of helping the child gain insight in Adlerian play therapy.
  5. List and describe at least three types of metacommunication
  6. List and describe at least 2 skills and 3 techniques for reorienting/reeducating the child in Adlerian play therapy
  7. Explain the role of and rationale for parent and/or teacher consultation in Adlerian play therapy
  8. Explain how to use personality priorities to customize communication with parents and teachers in consultation with parent and teachers as an adjunct to Adlerian play therapy.

B102, Lew, Amy – Using the Crucial Cs with Families, Teachers and Couples
The Crucial Cs is a construct developed to introduce Adler’s and Dreikurs’ ideas in a usable and easy to understand format which has been applied to work with families, schools, and couples, as well as in clinical settings. The Crucial Cs (the need to connect, feel capable, believe one counts and have courage) help us understand behavior and empathize with and encourage the people we live and work with as well as ourselves. This day long course will introduce the Crucial Cs, discuss applications, and address participants’ needs and concerns. It will include experiential exercises and demonstrations.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to

  1. describe the Crucial Cs
  2. determine the impact of the Crucial Cs in their own lives
  3. describe the connection between the Cs and Dreikurs’ Goals of Behavior
  4. identify which C is primary in an individual’s lifestyle
  5. apply the Cs to understanding human behavior
  6. describe ways to utilize the Cs to encourage others
  7. identify nonconstructive approaches to fulfilling the Cs
  8. apply methods to shift behavior from nonconstructive to useful approaches to fulfilling the Cs
  9. Apply the Cs to working with families
  10. Describe the value of weekly meetings in developing the Cs​
  11. Apply the Cs to working in an educational setting
  12. Use the Cs to analyze couple dynamics
  13. Develop action plans for applying the Crucial Cs in current situations
  14. Identify how not experiencing the Crucial Cs relates to maladaptive coping strategies
  15. Participants will be able to identify the roots of the Crucial Cs in Individual psychology
  16. Participants will be able to apply the Crucial Cs to working with anxiety around pandemic and other stressful situations.
